Saturday afternoon marked the first Explosive Southern Pigskin Camp of 2015, as many of the region’s top high school football players gathered at the Pooler Recreation Complex for hours of intense competition.
Here is a look at the prospects who earned the distinction of being the top performer at their respective position.
Offensive Line Top Performer: John Cano, Class of 2018 (Brunswick High School; Brunswick, GA)
Cano is still developing physically, but he already possesses fundamentals and techniques well beyond his years. He is a tenacious competitor who consistently won battles against older players on Saturday afternoon. If he continues to add size and muscle, he undoubtedly has a chance to be a very good player.
Defensive Line Top Performer: Alex Herndon, Class of 2016 (Calvary Day School; Savannah, GA)
A year after winning the top performer award as an offensive lineman, Herndon switched over to defense in 2015 and absolutely dominated the competition. A strong argument could be made that Herndon was the top overall prospect in attendance. He has an exceptional build, plenty of strength and a relentless motor. He is a high-level college prospect.
Running Back Top Performer: Joe Burke, Class of 2017 (Beach High School; Savannah, GA)
Running back may have been the most lightly-represented position at the Savannah camp, but that does not mean that there was a lack of talent at the position. Burke’s game goes well beyond his study frame, as he displayed nice lateral agility and speed in the open field. He will be a player to watch in Georgia the next couple of seasons.
Linebacker Top Performer: Troy Hamilton, Jr., Class of 2017 (Cross Creek High School; Augusta, GA)
Like Burke, Hamilton is an up-and-coming name on the high school football scene. He has a nice build for the position, but also demonstrates excellent hip flexibility and speed in the open field. Hamilton was physical at the point of attack and showed nice pass-coverage abilities against both tight ends and running backs.
Quarterback Top Performer: Nolan Arrington, Class of 2018 (Tri-Cities High School; Atlanta, GA)
Quarterback was arguably the deepest position on Saturday afternoon, and Arrington ultimately distinguished himself as the best of those in attendance. Arrington has outstanding throwing technique and displayed a quick release when getting the football out of his hands. As he continues to mature physically, Arrington should be one of the top signal callers in the state.
Defensive Back Top Performer: Deejay Dallas, Class of 2017 (Glynn Academy; Brunswick, GA)
If Alex Herndon was not the top participant at the camp, then there is no doubt that it was Dallas. Having recently won the top performer award at the MVP Camp in Valdosta, Dallas made it easy to see why Georgia recently offered a scholarship. He turned in the fastest time in the 40-yard dash at 4.42, and completely locked down receivers all afternoon.
Wide Receiver Top Performer: Shemar Bridges, Class of 2016 (Potters House Christian; Jacksonville, FL)
Bridges has greatly increased his athleticism from a season ago. Although he is still a little thin for the position, Bridges is a rangy receiver who uses craftiness to get open. Bridges is capable of making tough catches in traffic and is also an exceptional route-runner.
