Brunswick High senior Danijah Gammage is an impressive class of 2017 college prospect at safety.

At 6’2”, 185 pounds, Brunswick High senior Danijah Gammage is an impressive class of 2017 college prospect at safety. He has ideal size, strong instincts and full-field range; he also has a perspective that goes beyond the football field.

Gammagae has been a pursued-prospect over the last couple of months, garnering attention for his dynamic skill set as his senior season approaches. Of the number of programs that were aware of Gammage, Mercer, per the rising senior, had been the most persistent. On Tuesday, Gammage committed to head coach Bobby Lamb and the Bears.

“With Mercer, they recruited me the hardest and I feel like I can make the biggest impact there and that is the best situation for me. Plus, they have my major and that is pharmacy,” Gammage explained.

The fit, on a number of different fronts, seemed right for the coastal Georgia-native. Gammage enjoyed the campus, bonded with the coaches and saw a specific academic and athletic future with the Bears. With Macon just a little over three hours from Brunswick, Gammage will be able to stay relatively close to home as he moves on to the next level.

“What stood out to me was how close the players were to the coaches, it was like a big family there,” Gammage continued. “Second was the education. Pharmacy was my major. It is a medical school and I think I will be able to get my degree in pharmacy from there.”

On the field, Gammage understands his strengths as a defender and takes the field on Friday nights with a calm confidence.

“My biggest strength is my length. I’m able to make plays on the ball,” he explained. “I’m physical, I come downhill and I’m just a playmaker.”

Gammage was able to lean on his teammates as he worked towards making a decision about his future. Offensive lineman D’antne Demery, committed to Georgia, and wide receiver Shawn Smith, committed to South Carolina, are among his peers who have gone through and are going through the recruiting process. The end result was a pledge to Mercer.

“My teammates, they told me to go where I felt was right,” Gammage stated.

The spotlight, for Gammage, is now on his final year of high school football. Grateful for the opportunity but now ready to turn the page from recruiting, Gammage is both excited with his decision and fired up and ready for this fall. The Pirates have a pre-season victory under their belts as their official opener approaches.

For both himself and his program, Gammage has high expectations for this year.

“I can focus now on the season and accomplish my main goal of winning a state championship as a team,” he added.

Looking ahead, there is a plan in place for one of the area’s top players. Gammage likes what he sees.
