It was a showcase that affirms Bryce Young as the Heisman Trophy favorite.

Entering Saturday, Bryce Young was already have an historic year: 71% passing, 3,025 yards, 33 touchdowns and three interceptions. From there, in the midst of one of the most productive and proficient seasons ever in college football, he promptly went out and had the best game of his career. Against nationally-ranked Arkansas on Saturday, Young set a new Alabama record with an absolutely-astonishing 559 yards and five touchdowns on 31-of-40 passing. It was a near-perfect performance.

It was a showcase that affirms Young as the Heisman Trophy favorite.

Young became just the third quarterback this millennium with a game with at least 550 passing yards, five touchdowns and 75% completions to go along with no interceptions. Given the foe, Arkansas ranked third in the SEC in pass defense and pass defense efficiency, and the stage, a top 25 pairing where Alabama clinched the division, and the score, the Crimson Tide needed every touchdown, it’s fair to say that Young just had one of college football’s all-time best performances.

Downfield passing from Young to both Jameson Williams and John Metchie III proved to be unstopablle. Most notably, Young completed eight passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns to Williams, including a score of 79 yards. Young also threw ten passes to Metchie for 173 yards and a score. The end result was Young averaging 14 yards per attempt, a new career high against Power Five competition.

Already, Young was having a special season. It’s been one that probably hasn’t been properly appreciated given the remarkable successes of his predecessors. Somehow, Young has followed three of the greatest quarterbacks in college football history and added to the status quo.

With one regular season game left to go, Young is the Heisman Trophy frontrunner. Poised to become Alabama’s first quarterback to win the award, he is creating his own incredible legacy. On Saturday, he was as good as it gets.
