While controversial at times, Steve Spurrier has rarely failed to provide a laugh when hes in front of a microphone.

Its hard to believe, but South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier will turn 70 on Monday. In 25 seasons as a college head coach, Spurrier has provided countless memorable moments, both on the field and in front of the microphone.

To celebrate the Head Ball Coachs milestone birthday, we are reflecting on his quarter-century in college football by looking back at some of Spurriers greatest players, games and, of course, quotes.

On Friday, we gave you the top 10 quarterbacks that played for Spurrier. Today, its the legendary Spurrier sound bites. While controversial at times, Spurrier has rarely failed to provide a laugh when hes in front of a microphone.

Without further ado, here are Spurriers top 10 quotes.

10. cA&M has recruited well, I know that. I read those rankings every year,d Spurrier said. cKevin Sumlin has an excellent record as a coach. Hes a good negotiator, we know that also.d 3 July 15, 2014

After Sumlin received a contract extension and a raise to $5 million following a 9-4 season, Spurrier hinted that, perhaps, the Aggies werent quite getting enough bang for their buck.

9. cWelp, everybodys got to be from somewhere.d 3 as told by The State South Carolina beat writer Josh Kendall on the March 3 Oxford Exxon podcast.

Upon introducing himself to Spurrier after taking over the Gamecocks beat, Kendall was asked by Spurrier where he was from. The above quote came after Kendall replied, cAthens, Georgiad, home of the University of Georgia, the target of many a Spurrier quip.

8. cThe way we play is embarrassing. I told the guys its embarrassing, and Im the head coach of this embarrassing group of guys. Weve got all the voters fooled, thinking were pretty good, I guess because we beat Georgia.d 3 September 20, 2014

After struggling to defeat a hapless Vanderbilt team last September, Spurrier lit into his team for its poor performance. Of course, it didnt come without a reference to the teams upset win over Georgia a week earlier.

7. cYou think I make the schedule? If I made the schedule, Georgia would be playing LSU and wed be playing Ole Miss.d 3 July 18, 2012

Spurrier was asked at 2012 SEC Media Days about South Carolina playing defending SEC West champion LSU and rival Georgia playing Ole Miss, losers of 14 straight SEC games at that time. The Gamecocks and Rebels have not met since then, but Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said he would remember that statement.

6. cIn Knoxville, theyre still doing cartwheels because they went 7-6 and won a bowl game.d- March 2015

After saying his team had ca decent yeard in 2014 by going 7-6, Spurrier referenced the optimism at Tennessee after posting an identical 7-6 record. To be fair, the Gamecocks had gone 11-2 in each of the previous three seasons, while the Volunteers finished 5-7 in all three years.

5. cI dont know. I always sort of liked playing [Georgia] that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended.d 3 April 2012

Early-season suspensions at Georgia became a running joke for much of the early part of the decade. South Carolina had traditionally played Georgia in mid-September, but the 2012 game was moved to October after SEC expansion caused some scheduling quirks.

4. cA swamp is where Gators live. We feel comfortable there, but we hope our opponents feel tentative. A swamp is hot and sticky and can be dangerous. Only Gators get out alive.d 3 1990

Spurrier coined the now well-accepted nickname for Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville shortly after arriving at Florida.

3. cI wanted to hang half a hundred on 8em.d- Oct. 28, 1995

Georgia had never allowed 50 points in a game at Sanford Stadium prior to the 1995 Florida-Georgia game. The game was played in Athens as the back half of a home-and-home series at campus sites while Jacksonville Municipal Stadium was being renovated. With the game out of hand, Florida scored a meaningless late touchdown to reach the 50-point mark in a 52-17 rout.

2. cYou know what FSU stands for, dont you? Free Shoes University.d 3 June 1994

After Florida State won its first national title in 1993, it was discovered that agents had bought thousands of dollars worth of shoes for Seminoles players. Spurrier offered a different explanation of what FSU stands for, one that some Gators fans still use today when referring to their in-state rival.

1. cYou cant spell Citrus without U-T.d 3 1997

For many years, the SEC runner-up would play in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. During the mid-890s, when Tennessee and Florida dominated the conference, the Volunteers went to three Citrus Bowls in four years, all in seasons in which the Gators defeated Tennessee. Despite another win over Tennessee in 1997, Spurrier had to eat his words briefly, when two SEC losses dropped the Gators behind the Vols in the SEC East and off to 3 you guessed it 3 the Citrus Bowl.
