Though Jimbo Fisher is known more for offense, his latest team can certainly win with defense, too

It’s Texas A&M, not Alabama or Georgia, that leads the SEC in total defense.

The Aggies have been the conference’s best defense and that is with them having already played the top two scoring offenses in the league. Both balanced and effective, Texas A&M currently ranks second in the SEC in rush defense, fourth in pass defense, second in third down defense, third in sacks and fourth in interceptions. Overall, the Aggies have allowed the fewest plays of ten, 20 and 30 yards in the conference. Coordinator Mike Elko has Texas A&M playing a confident and attacking style.

Not only are the Aggies playing great defensively, they are getting better. In its last two games, LSU and South Carolina, Texas A&M has given up just ten total points and 417 total yards. The Aggies led all of college football with merely 208.5 yards per game allowed for the month of November.

While playmaking stars like Kellen Mond, Isaiah Spiller, Ainias Smith and Jalen Wydermyer also obviously deserve plenty of acclaim, as Texas A&M ranks fourth in the SEC in scoring offense, the Aggies’ defense is the story entering the season’s stretch run. Texas A&M is a legitimate College Football Playoff contender this December and it’s defense, led by the likes of linebacker Buddy Johnson, tackle Bobby Brown III and cornerback Myles Jones, is a big reason why.

Though Jimbo Fisher is known more for offense, his latest team can certainly win with defense, too. A recent victory over the defending national champions was a prime example.

With major momentum and national implications on the line, Texas A&M will next travel to Auburn for another tough SEC West test. A year ago, the Aggies had one of their best defensive performances of the season against the Tigers, holding Auburn to less than 300 yards of total offense. This time, Texas A&M will look for similar results with a top five ranking in the polls and arguably the hottest defense in the game.

The Aggies have positioned themselves as one of the nation’s best. In recent weeks, the defense certainly has as well.
