It was the Catamounts first win over the Mocs since 2008 and their first win in Scenic City since 2005.

The 2017 Western Carolina Catamounts keep breaking streaks.  Last week, the Catamounts snapped a 27-game losing streak to FCS ranked opponents by defeating then 17th ranked Samford 38-34. This week Western Carolina won back to back road games for the first time since the 2010 season with a 45-7 thrashing of Chattanooga. It was the Catamounts first win over the Mocs since 2008 and their first win in Scenic City since 2005.

Playing without the leading rusher in FCS Football Detrez Newsome, the Catamounts defense took center stage limiting Chattanooga to just 172 total yards, including 49 on the ground. Coming into the game Western Carolina’s defense was giving up 434 yards per game. The Catamount defense outscored the Mocs in the second quarter alone recovering two Nick Tiano fumbles in the end zone.  A.J. Newman recovered the first fumble and forced the second fumble, that was recovered by Nate Link leading to a 24-0 Catamount halftime lead.

In the absence of All-SoCon running back Detrez Newsome, Corey Holloway ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Catamounts. Tyrie Adams threw a touchdown pass to go along with 125 yards for the Catamounts.

Chattanooga’s starting quarterback from last year Alejandro Bennifield saw his first action of 2017 returning from a four-game suspension passing for 29 yards on just three completions. Third string quarterback Dominic Caldwell threw a fourth quarter touchdown pass to Darrell Bridges to keep the Mocs from being shutout for the first time since a 49-0 loss to Alabama in 2013 and first SoCon shutout since losing to Wofford in 2006.

Western Carolina will look to improve to 3-0 in the SoCon for the first time since 2014 when they travel to Spartanburg to take on (7) Wofford. Chattanooga will host Furman in Max Finley Stadium.
