Western Carolina benefitted from 5 Citadel turnovers and some strong red-zone defense to grab a 31-19 win over the Bulldogs in Charleston for the first time since 2010. The Bulldogs rushed for 367 yards in the game but stalled out in the red-zone 3 out of the 5 times they made it inside the Catamounts 20-yard line.

Western Carolina was led by quarterback Tyrie Adams, who left last week’s game with Furman due to a leg injury, passing for 133 yards and three touchdowns. Detrez Newsome returned to his dominating ways on the ground after being hampered by nagging injuries the last few weeks running for 197 yards and a touchdown.

Citadel quarterback Dom Allen had a tough day in the air throwing three interceptions but led a strong Bulldog ground game with 116 yards on 17 carries. Cam Jackson added 60 yards on the ground as well.  The Citadel turned the ball over twice in the red-zone on Senior Day in Charleston for one of the most successful classes in school history.

With the win, Western Carolina keeps their slim chances at sharing the SoCon title alive along with their FCS Playoff hopes. The Catamounts have not reached the postseason since 1983 when they reached the 1-AA Title game.

The Catamounts finish up SoCon play next Saturday in Cullowhee hosting Mercer. The Citadel heads to the Upstate to take on arch-rival Furman now in a spoiler role as any hope of an FCS Playoff berth for the 3rd year in a row ended with this loss to Western Carolina.
