Furman racked up 600 total yards, 414 of those on the ground in the win while limiting Mercer to just 283 total yards.

Furman opened their SOCON schedule in a big way, taking out their frustrations of two near misses in FBS games the past two weeks by beating Mercer 45-10 in Greenville Saturday afternoon. The Paladins lost to Georgia State and Virginia Tech in two consecutive weeks by a combined 13 points.

Furman racked up 600 total yards, 414 of those on the ground in the win while limiting Mercer to just 283 total yards. Furman’s 414 rushing yards is the most yards on the ground for the Paladins since rushing for 436 yards versus Chattanooga in 2003. Devin Wynn led Furman with 99 yards on the ground on 13 carries, Corey Watkins notched 97 yards on 5 carries including an 83-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter, one of his two scoring runs on the day. Paladin quarterback Darren Grainger continued his great play passing for 190 yards and a touchdown completing 9 of his 16 passes. The Paladins are 1-0 in the SOCON for the first time under head coach Clay Hendrix. Furman will host ETSU next Saturday.

Mercer was led on offense by quarterback Robert Riddle who was 18 of 34 with 129 yards and one touchdown. Tyray Devezin led the Bears on the ground with 62 yards on 10 carries. David Durden hauled in Riddle’s only touchdown pass from 8 yards out early in the 2nd quarter. Mercer will entertain Campbell in an out of conference game next week in Macon.

This was the third meeting between Furman head coach Clay Hendrix and Mercer head coach Bobby Lamb who are longtime friends, former teammates at Commerce (GA) High School and Furman, as well as former coaching mates at Furman for 19 years.
