The Terriers wore down a very aggressive Furman defense using a more than nine-minute advantage in time of possession to hang on for a season opening 24-23 win in Spartanburg.

Wofford has been running their version of the option based offense for 30 years under Coach Mike Ayers. Furman has been running their version of the option based offense under 1st year coach Clay Hendrix 7 months. The Terriers wore down a very aggressive Furman defense using a more than nine-minute advantage in time of possession to hang on for a season opening 24-23 win in Spartanburg.

The 91st installment of The Deep South’s oldest rivalry did not disappoint as Wofford’s Malik Rivera intercepted the Paladins two-point conversion attempt with 46 seconds left in the game enabling the Terriers to hang on for the one-point victory. Furman’s Triston Luke scored with a 44-yard touchdown run down the Paladins sideline to bring his team within 1 point. Clay Hendrix, coaching his first game for his alma mater, didn’t hesitate to go for the potential game winner instead of playing for overtime. After calling timeout, Furman Wide Receiver Ryan DeLuca took the snap on a trick play and had his pass, intended for quarterback PJ Blazejowski, intercepted at the goal line.

After playing to a 10-10 tie in the first half, Furman took a 17-10 lead on the opening drive of the second half with a 10-play, 84-yard drive capped off by a 3-yard Blazejowski run. Wofford scored on back to back 4th quarter possessions to take a 24-17 lead with a Chase Nelson 1-yard touchdown run with 2:46 left.

Furman’s Blazejowski finished the night 13 of 24 with 224 yards through the air, Darius Morehead led the Paladins on the ground with 56 yards on 10 carries. Wofford’s Brandon Gibson was very efficient with his passes finishing 8 of 11 for 81 yards, the Terriers were led on the ground by Lennox McAfee with 67 yards on 11 carries.

Wofford continues their early season slate of tough conference matchups next week as they travel to Macon to take on Mercer. Clay Hendrix will coach his first game in Paladin Stadium since 2006, this time as the Head Coach, next week with former SoCon member Elon coming to Greenville.
