The post Devlin Hodges Era got off to a rough start last week for the Samford Bulldogs falling 45-22 to Youngstown State in the Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama. The Bulldogs used two quarterbacks who hope to fill the shoes of the departed record-breaking signal caller. Liam Welch, Hodges back up last year, got the start was 13 of 22 for 142, a touchdown and three interceptions. USF transfer Chris Oladokun also played finishing 7 of 10 for 125 yards with a 64-yard touchdown pass to go along with a touchdown on the ground. Samford looks to bounce back this week on the road Saturday night at Tennessee Tech.

Mercer and Western Carolina get an early start in SOCON play Saturday night in Cullowhee. The Bears last opened the season with a conference game in 2016 falling to The Citadel 24-23 in Macon. The Catamounts have not opened a season with a league game since 1996 a 17-13 loss to Appalachian State. Mercer has won three straight in the series with Western Carolina including a shootout last year in Macon, a 56-46win by the Bears.

Wofford is again the top pick to win the SOCON Title in 2019. The Terriers have won at least a share of the league title in each of the last two seasons. The Terriers earned 7 of 9 first place votes in the preseason coaches’ poll and 21 of 29 first place votes in the preseason media poll.

Wofford and Furman are the only two SOCON teams ranked in the Stats FCS Top 25 poll to begin the season. The Terriers begin the season ranked 9th and the Paladins are ranked 19th in the poll. The Citadel, ETSU, Chattanooga, Mercer and Samford all received votes in the preseason Stats FCS Top 25 poll.
