Looking ahead to week five in the Southern Conference.

Five of the six SoCon games this season have been decided by a total of 15 points, two games by one point (Wofford over Furman 24-23, Wofford over Mercer 28-27) one game by three points (ETSU over Mercer 26-23), one game by four points (Western Carolina over Samford 38-34) and one game by six points (The Citadel over ETSU 31-25). 

The SoCon has schools that are ranking high in a few National statistical categories heading into week 5. The Citadel lead the Nation in rushing yards with 380 per game, 2nd Nationally in time of possession with over 37 minutes per game and first in the Nation in 3rd down conversions with an eye popping 61.2%. The Bulldogs are also 5th in total defense giving up 237 yards per game. Western Carolina is 3rd in the Nation in total offense averaging 571.3 yards per game. VMI and Furman are tied for 2nd in the Nation averaging only 3 penalties committed per game thus far in the season and The Citadel is 4th in that category committing on average 3.33 penalties per game. 

Individually the league is well represented in the National statistics as well. Western Carolina’s Detrez Newsome is 4th in the Nation with 139.2 rushing yards per game, 1st in the Nation with 557 rushing yards and leads the Nation in all-purpose yards with 216.50 yards per game. Samford’s Devlin Hodges ranks 5th in FCS with 325.3 passing yards per game, 4th in the Nation with 1301 passing yards, and 2nd in the Nation with 84 points responsible for. Hodges favorite target, Kelvin McKnight ranks 1st in receptions per game with 9.3, 3rd in both receiving yards per game and receiving yards with 123.5 per game and 494 respectively.
