Looking back at the best players in the Southern Conference during week one.

Offensive Player of the Week: Mercer quarterback Robert Riddle led the Bears on the road to Cullowhee and came away with a big season opening league win. Riddle was 11 of 23 for 207 yards and four touchdowns in the Bears 49-27 win over Western Carolina.

Defensive Player of the Week: John Brannon III gave Western Carolina one bright spot defensively with his 23-yard interception return for a touchdown to get the Catamounts to within a touchdown after Mercer scored two quick touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead.  Brannon III finished the game with two tackles to go along with his interception return. 

Special Teams Player of the Week: David Durden from Mercer set the tone early in the Bears 49-27 win over Western Carolina. Durden returned the opening kickoff 82 yards to set up Mercer’s first touchdown. Durden finished the day with two returns for 115 yards to go along with his three receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Coach of the Week: Chattanooga’s Rusty Wright won his first game as the Mocs head coach 24-10 over Eastern Illinois. Wright, a former player and assistant coach for the Mocs was hired to replace Tom Arth.

X Factor of the Week: Furman’s Devin Wynn led a punishing Paladin ground attack in a 46-13 win over Charleston Southern. Wynn accounted for 131 of the Paladins 369 yards on the ground and added one touchdown from 13 yards out in the second quarter.
