The Wofford Terriers picked up where they left off in 2017 by finding a way to win a close game. Seven of Wofford’s ten wins last season were by 7 points or less, five by 4 points or less. The Terriers hung on to beat The Citadel 28-21 to give first year head coach Josh Conklin his first win as Wofford’s head man. Wofford has now won nine straight league lid lifters dating back to 2010.

The Terriers jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind two long touchdown runs, a 70-yard Ryan Lovelace jaunt and a 62-yard Lennox McAfee gallop. McAfee added another in the second quarter to give Wofford a 21-0 lead. The Citadel then scored three straight touchdowns of their own to tie the game heading into the fourth quarter. A Noah Dawkins 47-yard interception return for touchdown was bookended by a 10-yard Lorenzo Ward touchdown run and a 1-yard touchdown scamper by Rod Johnson.

Wofford used a methodical seven minute and twenty-seven second, 14 play, 82-yard drive to take the lead for good on a 1-yard Blake Morgan touchdown plunge. The Citadel drove into the red zone to the 5-yard line with under a minute to play but ended the game on four consecutive incomplete passes.

Wofford rushed for 340 yards in the game led by McAfee with 85 yards and two touchdowns. The Citadel finished with 217 yards on the ground led by Lorenzo Ward with 117 and a touchdown.  Wofford has now won 18 straight home openers at Gibbs Stadium and hosts VMI next Saturday. The Citadel welcomes Chattanooga to Johnson Hagood Stadium next Saturday to open their 2018 home slate.
