Stetson Bennett continues to be one of the most proficient quarterbacks in all of college football.
Another big game for Georgia, another big performance from Stetson Bennett. Stepping in at quarterback for the Bulldogs early this season due to an injury to starter J.T. Daniels, Bennett continues to be one of the most proficient quarterbacks in all of college football.
Bennett, facing undefeated, 11th ranked Kentucky on Saturday, calmly completed 14-of-20 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns. Such a performance has quickly become his status quo. Bennett averaged 12.5 yards per attempt, matching his season average, against a defense for the Wildcats that entered the weekend allowing the fewest passing plays of 20 yards or more in the country. On his first throw of the game, Bennett promptly found Darnell Washington for a 21-yard game.
The current numbers only confirm Bennett’s steady and successful play in a historical context. He has now completed 57-of-82 passes, 69.5% passing, for 996 yards, good for 12.1 yards per attempt, eleven touchdowns and two interceptions. Bennett’s passer rating is now 210.93; for point of reference, Alabama’s Mac Jones set college football’s new single-season record last year with a passer rating of 203.06. For good measure, Bennett even has nearly 150 yards rushing. All for the number one team in the country.
Georgia’s last three games have all come in the spotlight against nationally-ranked SEC competition: Arkansas, Auburn and Kentucky. In those contests, two of which were against previously-undefeated teams, Bennett has thrown for a combined 553 yards, with five touchdowns and zero interceptions. He followed up a 14-for-21 completion rate against the Tigers with 14-of-20 passing versus the Wildcats.
Earlier this season against UAB, Bennett completed 8-of-9 throws for 269 yards and a program-record tying five touchowns — in the first half.
There are multiple talented quarterbacks on Georgia’s roster and Daniels, who debuted for the Bulldogs with 401 yards and four touchdowns against Mississippi State a season ago, has played at an elite level as well. His lat injury has been a lingering one. Bennett, who originally came to Georgia as a walk-on, has helped the Bulldogs become the top-ranked team in all of college football. He has created a lasting legacy along the way.
