The first start of Young’s career was an impressive one.

Expectations are high for Alabama’s Bryce Young. The former five-star signal caller from Pasadena, California has everything you look for in a QB1. He also closed out the spring with the momentum of an impressive springboard forward.

Young, a true sophomore, promptly earned game MVP honors in Alabama’s annual spring scrimmage, completing 25-of-44 passes for 333 yards and a touchdown. He threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cameron Latu for one of the highlights of the afternoon. A clear focal point on Saturday and the new leading name under center for the Crimson Tide, Young was productive while also protecting the football in the scheme of new offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.

The first start of Young’s career was an impressive one; it came against potentially the best defenses in the country and with the greatest coach in college football history right there watching and, with positive reviews post-game, approving.

A talented quarterback who pundits have been talking about for years, Young was confident and effective over the weekend. He appears poised and ready to continue Alabama’s stunning run of success at quarterback. With Young leading the way, expectations, for the Crimson Tide, clearly remain. This is a team that will be favored to win yet another national championship; Young, as he showed on Saturday, is a big reason why. Alabama likely has another superstar at the game’s most important position.

Young played in nine games a year ago as the top reserve to Mac Jones, who just set a new national single-season passer rating record, went undefeated and won the College Football Playoff. After just one season in the program, Young will now start his own legacy. Many believe he, even in year one as a starter, could be a Heisman Trophy candidate this fall. Even as he settles in, Young is possibly set to be one of the best players in college football.

At power Mater Dei High School, Young compiled 13,250 career passing yards and 152 passing touchdowns, 1,084 career rushing yards and 26 more rushing scores. He also won four state titles, leading the program in 2018 and 2019. Young takes over at Alabama with a remarkable resume and the potential to obviously add to it moving forward. His first spring practice in Tuscaloosa, capped with a very good showing in the final scrimmage, has anticipation and excitement rising.

It was actually Young who closed out last season’s championship game triumph over Ohio State. Alabama’s next-in-line is ready for more of the same.
