Fan voting declares Georgia’s Herschel Walker the modern SEC player of the era.

In parallel with the NCAA tournament, we at SouthernPigskin.com created a 16-person bracket of the best modern players (1980+) in the three leagues in our coverage area. Fan voting decided this tournament-style format, with winners from each pairing advancing on just like in March Madness. From 16 to one, readers of SouthernPigskin.com have voiced their opinions on the best of the best.

Former Georgia running back Herschel Walker was voted as the top player in modern SEC history. Walker was a three-time All-American at Georgia, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner. He is the only player in history to finish in the top three in the Heisman Trophy voting each of the years he played. He led Georgia to a national championship in 1980 as the Bulldogs topped Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Walker was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

Walker, the one seed in the bracket, defeated Kevin Faulk of LSU, Danny Wuerffel of Florida, Reggie White of Tennessee in the final four and Arkansas’ Darren McFadden in the final. Walker received 72% of the championship round fan votes. The college football great is the SouthernPigskin.com Fan Vote SEC Player of the Era.
