Citadel Loses Another Close Game

The Citadel loses their SoCon game against ETSU, 28-21.
The Bulldogs (0-8, 0-4) made it interesting late in the fourth quarter, but could not convert a short fourth down attempt to keep their hopes alive. The Buccaneers (2-1, 2-1) were outgained in total yards by the Bulldogs (236 to 223), but ETSU benefitted from three Citadel turnovers (two fumbles and an interception).
Citadel quarterback Jaylan Adams was injured midway through the 3rd quarter. At the time of his injury, he had 51 passing and 27 rushing yards, along with a touchdown. His backup, redshirt-sophomore Darique Hampton, came into the game and performed well. He finished with 47 yards passing and nearly willed the Bulldogs to tie the game at the end.
Like many of The Citadelxe2x80x99s games this season, the Bulldogs were plagued by a slow start. This time, though, it was not the defensexe2x80x99s fault. It was an offensive blunder. Adams fumbled on the second play of the game. ETSU returned the turnover 27 yards for a touchdown.
Early in the first quarter, The Citadel would eventually settle down, forcing a fumble of their own deep into ETSUxe2x80x99s territory. But a fumble by the Bulldogs on a punt return led to another Buccaneer touchdown in the second quarter.0
The score was tied 14-14 at the half.
In the second half, ETSU gained the momentum, scoring 14 consecutive points in their first two possessions. After that, Citadel was simply playing xe2x80x9ccatch-up.xe2x80x9d
CItadel punter Matt Campbell had an excellent game, punting four times with an average of 43.5 yards.
Bulldog linebacker Anthony Britton Jr. led the Citadel defense with eight tackles in the contest.
The Bulldogs are back at Johnson Hagood Stadium to face Samford next Saturday at 1pm.
