For the first time since the NCAA re-classified Division 1 football teams in 1982 theSouthern Conference had four teams selected for the FCS Playoffs.
nFor the first time since the NCAA re-classified Division 1 football teams in 1982 the Southern Conference had four teams selected for the FCS Playoffs. The SOCON has placed three teams in the tournament 11 times (1988, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2011, and 2012) and have had a team with the National Title on 8 occasions, Appalachain State won three titles, Georgia Southern and Marshall won two titles each as members of the SOCON and Furman has won one National Title.
nThe Southern Conference joined the Big Sky, Missouri Valley and Colonial Athletic Association as the four conferences that each earned four bids. Southern Conference teams are 103-66 in the FCS playoffs, which is the best record among FCS Conferences.
nSOCON Champion The Citadel received the automatic bid into the playoff field and was awarded the 6th seed and a first round bye into the second round. The Citadel will be making back to back appearances in the FCS Playoffs for the first time in school history and their 3rd overall FCS Playoff appearance. The Citadel will host a second round game on December 3rd and have a 2-2 record in the FCS Playoffs. The Bulldogs will play the winner of Wofford and Charleston Southern in the second round.
nThe Chattanooga Mocs will be making their third in a row and fourth overall appearance in the FCS playoffs. The Mocs (8-30 will host Weber State (7-4) out of the Big Sky Conference at 2pm on Saturday at Max Finley Stadium. Chattanooga has a 2-3 record in the playoffs and has fallen in the second round each of the past two seasons. Wofford is making their sixth FCS playoff appearance and their first since 2012 when they reached the quarterfinals. The Terriers (8-3) will host Big South Conference Champion Charleston Southern (7-3) on Saturday at Gibbs Stadium with a 2pm kickoff. Wofford holds an all time record of 5-6 in the playoffs with their best showing coming in 2003 when they made the semi-finals losing to eventual National Champion Delaware.
nSamford appears in the playoff field for the fourth time, second time as a member of the SOCON, their last appearance coming in 2013. The Bulldogs (7-4) are 2-3 all time in the playoffs and will play on the road at Youngstown State (8-3) out of the Missouri Valley Conference at 5pm on Saturday.
