Getting your best 11 players on field is a big part of spring drills. Some gain experience while others are learning a new position.

The bottom line for college football coaches is winning and to win you generally must have your best 11 athletes on the field. You can’t coach fast twitch athletes. They either have it, or don’t . Here is a quick run down of notable position changes in the ACC. In other words, coaches finding a place for their best eleven players.

FSU- Lamarcus Joyner: As a freshmen in 2010, he was a decent backup cornerback, he is now switching back to his high school position where he was a ball hawk at free safety.

FSU- Avis Commack: He never saw the field playing wide receiver, but he has done so well in the spring as a cornerback, that he was a big reason the coaches moved Joyner back to safety.

GT- Daniel Drummond: He was a back up B-back that played sparingly, since his switch to linebacker this off season it’s been said that he’s been flying up the depth chart. GT fans will likely see a lot of him next season.

MD- David Mackall: He was a backup linebacker that recorded 3 sacks in 2010, next season he’s back to his high school position at defensive end.

MD- Kenny Tate: Coach Edsall is switching the 1st team All ACC safety to a “STAR”, a hybrid linebacker that is supposed to take advantage of Tate’s size and speed.

UNC- Quinton Coples: The 1st team All ACC defensive tackle will now try to become an All ACC defensive end. In his place will be the 320 pound juco transfer Sylvester Williams.

UNC- Tre Boston: He played a lot last season as a backup cornerback, but out of need the coaches are going to try to use his talents at safety to hopefully solidify that position.

NCSU- Audie Cole: Not a drastic move, but Cole slides over from strong side linebacker to the middle linebacker spot left vacated by Nate Irving.

UVA- Ausar Walcott: The 3rd leading tackler last season for Virginia from the linebacker position, he added 20 pounds of muscle in the off season and is now moving to defensive end.

VT- Chris Drager: The only starter on the defensive line returning for the Hokies and he gets moved to tight end. Who saw that one coming?

VT- Danny Coale:What other position will this senior, star wide receiver take on? Try punter, according to Frank Beamer “If I don’t have some better consistency[from the other punters], we’re going to go with Danny.”

WFU- Kyle Wilber: Now that Wake switched to a 3-4 base defense, Wilber himself makes the switch to being their best defensive end, to best outside linebacker.
