SEC East

1. Florida – The 2006 national champions slipped a notch last season, but return a fast and athletic team led by the reigning Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.  As the pre-season polls indicate, expectations are as high as ever for the Gators.

Tebow is the obvious catalyst offensively.  In a season where he scored 55 total touchdowns, as a sophomore in the SEC mind you, Tebow became the first underclassmen in history to win the Heisman Trophy.  His cause will be aided by the influx of USC transfer Emmanuel Moody and redshirt freshman Chris Rainey at running back, who will join Kestahn Moore and occasionally Percy Harvin in the offensive backfield.  Harvin, who scored ten total touchdowns, will more frequently line up at receiver, where he is one of the nation’s best.  Senior Louis Murphy is another talented option.  The team will miss All-SEC tight end Cornelius Ingram, who will miss the season due to injury.  The offensive line should be strong with three returning starters and another, Phil Trautwein, coming back from injury.  The Gators finished third in the nation in 2007 in scoring offense and could be even better this fall. 

Rising experience defensively should lead to considerable improvement.  A unit that was one of the youngest in the SEC last year is now loaded with returning starters.  End Jermaine Cunningham may be the next star edge rusher in the league.  Behind him roams the conference’s top linebacker, Brandon Spikes.  He recorded 131 tackles last season.  The secondary has talented young corners, led by Joe Haden and an emerging star at free safety in Major Wright.  Depth at strong safety has become a concern, however, after projected starter Dorian Monroe went down with a season-ending injury. 

A true freshman, Caleb Sturgis, takes over the kicking duties.  Chas Henry returns at punter.  Brandon James could contend for All-American honors as a return man.  Florida has been one of the premier teams in the nation the last few years at blocking kicks and punts.

2. Georgia – The Bulldogs have been named the pre-season number one team in the nation by the AP and the coaches.  Georgia has the talent to earn such high-praise.  Question is, can they overcome the toughest schedule in all of college football?

Tailback Knowshon Moreno played so well as a freshman that he invoked memories of you know who in Athens.  He accumulated 1,334 yards and 13 touchdowns despite only starting just six games.  He is one of the premier tailbacks in the nation.  Quarterback Matt Stafford is worthy of similar attention.  After throwing 19 touchdowns and just ten interceptions, he too is an All-American candidate.  The receiver rotation is yet to be defined.  Senior Mohamed Massaquoi is the leader of the unit and is talented.  After him, there is a lot of potential but not a lot of returning production.  Look out for true freshman receiver A.J. Green.  A year older and wiser, an offensive line that performed admirably as youngsters in 2007 should only be better. 

The Georgia defense used the Sugar Bowl against Hawaii to showcase their supreme speed and athleticism.  Much of that unit is back for another run.  Tackles Geno Atkins and Jeff Owens provide the foundation up front and disruptive interior forces.  There is solid depth at defensive end.  Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe is the first-team All-SEC material and a tackling machine.  The secondary has the potential to be very good.  Three starters return and hopes are very high for sophomore safety Reshad Jones.  Asher Allen, Prince Miller, Ramarcus Brown and Bryan Evans form a very strong and deep cornerback rotation. 

True freshman Blair Walsh is the new kicker.  Senior Brian Mimbs return at punter.

3. Tennessee –  After a run to the SEC Championship game and an Outback Bowl win in 2007, most have projected Tennessee no higher than third place in 2008.  A new quarterback in Jonathan Crompton and new offensive coordinator Dave Clawson will have the chance to prove the critics wrong.
Offensively the Vols will look to Crompton to run the Clawson spread attack.  The pieces are in place to be successful with eight starters returning.  Senior running back Arian Foster needs less than 700 yards to become Tennessee’s all-time leader rusher.  He will run behind an experienced offensive line that returns four linemen who started every game a season ago.  The line will be anchored by senior All-American guard Anthony Parker and center Josh McNeil.  The unit gave up the fewest sacks, four, in college football last year.  The wide receivers look solid as Lucas Taylor, Austin Rogers and Josh Briscoe all return.  They combined for 185 receptions in 2007.  Taylor is the league’s only returning 1,000 yard receiver. 
Defensively, the Vols can only go up in 2008 as coordinator John Chavis fielded his worst unit in quite some time last fall.  The secondary looks to be the strength of the defense as Eric Berry returns at safety following a freshman All-American season.  Rising star Demetrice Morley also returns after missing 2007.  DeAngelo Willingham and Brent Vinson should hold down the cornerback spots.  Junior Rico McCoy is the lone returner at linebacker.  He is an all-conference candidate and the league’s runner-up in returning tackles with 106.  The defensive line will be anchored by tackles Demonte Bolden and Dan Williams.
Freshman All-America kicker Jimmy Lincoln returns and will also handle the kickoffs.  Senior punter Britton Colquitt, All-SEC, is suspended for the first five games and will hand his duties over to sophomore Chad Cunningham.  Dennis Rogan should handle the returns and has big-play potential.

4. South Carolina – Steve Spurrier did not make a bowl game last year for the first time since 1987, his first year as head coach at Duke and his first year as a head coach period.  With perhaps the top defense in the SEC, ironically enough, leading the way, Spurrier and the Gamecocks are looking for a return to the postseason.

The offense will have some new components.  Enter junior Tommy Beecher, or sophomore Chris Smelley or redshirt freshman Stephen Garcia, or some combination of those three under center.  Who knows how Spurrier will handle the competition this fall.  Senior Mike Davis, a gritty between the tackles runner, takes over in the backfield.  One mainstay, All-SEC wide receiver Kenny McKinley, is back after recording 1,848 yards receiving and 14 touchdowns the past two seasons.  Dion Lecorn had an impressive freshman season.  Tight end Jared Cook is another reliable weapon.  Four starters do return on the offensive line, so improvement up front is expected.  Senior tackle James Meredith is the leader at the line of scrimmage.   

The Gamecocks could very well have the premier defense in the SEC.  With ten starters back, including All-American candidates Jasper Brinkley, Eric Norwood and Captain Munnerlyn, this unit is as talented and experienced as any in school history.  The defensive line has considerable muscle at the line of scrimmage, which frees up the top group of linebackers in the country.  Brinkley and Norwood combined for 33.5 tackles for loss in their last two full seasons.  Both players are devastating in run defense.  Munnerlyn earned first-team All-SEC honors at corner last season and safety Emanuel Cook earned second-team honors. 

Senior Ryan Succop has proven to be very effective as both a kicker and punter.  He has delivered some clutch kicks in his Gamecock career.

5. Kentucky – The Wildcats will look for new offensive leadership as 75 total touchdowns in the form of Andre’ Woodson, Rafael Little, Steve Johnson, Keenan Burton and Jacob Tamme must be replaced.  A more experienced defense may shoulder more of the responsibility. 

The offense now belongs to sophomore Mike Hartline.  With the graduation of Woodson and the dismissal of reserve Curtis Pulley, Hartline is now the man under center.  At 6’6’’, he is a tall pocket passer.  Last season, Hartline saw action against Eastern Kentucky and Florida Atlantic.  Aiding his transition will be the return of receiver Dicky Lyons, Jr.  Over the last two seasons, Lyons has scored 16 touchdowns and accumulated 106 receptions.  Senior Tony Dixon takes over for Little in the backfield and he was a solid number two in 2007.  Averaging 5.6 yards per carry, Dixon scored four touchdowns.  Kentucky expects to be improved up front as three starters return.  Senior Garry Williams is an all-conference candidate.

All four starters return up front, most notably All-SEC end Jeremy Jarmon.  Last season, he recorded nine sacks.  Only Ole Miss end Greg Hardy returns with more sacks in 2007.  Jarmon will spearhead a unit that should be improved despite the loss of the conference’s leading tackler Wesley Woodyard.  He is the new face of this program.  Seniors Johnny Williams and Braxton Kelly return at outside linebacker and junior Micah Johnson is a talented emerging middle linebacker.  Trevard Lindley and Paul Warford are experienced cornerbacks who are aggressive in coverage.  Lindley was a Freshman All-American in 2006.  Senior Marcus McClinton is back healthy.  Having him at 100% will give the secondary a boost.

Kicker Lonas Seiber and punter Tim Masthay both return.  Seiber converted on 16 of 25 attempts.  Dicky Lyons, Jr. is an explosive return man.

6. Vanderbilt – Gone are stars Earl Bennett, Chris Williams and Jonathan Goff to the NFL.  A new crop of leaders will now step up and try to take the Commodores to the postseason for the first time since 1982.

Vanderbilt has a nice problem on offense: they have two talented options at quarterback.  Senior Chris Nickson had 2,779 yards and 24 total touchdowns in 2006.  Sophomore Mackenzi Adams cumulated 1,332 yards and 12 total touchdowns last fall.  Both players are dual-threat signal callers who give the offense versatility and the threat of improvisation.  Junior Jared Hawkins has the inside track at tailback.  He led the team with a 4.4 yard rushing average in 2007 and a 6.9 yard per carry average in 2006.  He provides a big play threat in the offensive backfield.  Seniors George Smith and Sean Walker combined for 52 receptions and six touchdowns last season.  Both will have to take on expanded roles with Earl Bennett, the SEC’s all-time leader in receptions, now gone.  All five starters are gone along the offensive line, a huge concern considering the teams on the Commodores’ schedule.  Needless to say, new starters up front will need to adjust to more prominent roles quickly.

The secondary has the potential to be one of the top units in the conference.  Junior D.J. Moore is the league’s returning leader in passes defended with 16 and is one of the premier cover corners in all of college football.  He paced the SEC in interceptions with six.  Senior Reshard Langford, the quarterback of the defense, is a savvy veteran with the athleticism to excel in run or pass defense.  Junior cornerback Myron Lewis is the league’s returning leader in pass deflections with 12.  Ryan Hamilton is a sure tackler aside Langford.  End Broderick Stewart is a rising star on the defensive line.  As a sophomore, he recorded six sacks.  He will be one of the founding centerpieces of the Vanderbilt front seven.  Some new faces will need to step up along the defensive line and at linebacker.   

Brian Hahnfeldt and Brett Upson return at kicker and punter.  D.J. Moore and Alex Washington are exciting return men.

SEC West

1. Auburn – Despite breaking in two new coordinators, being in the same division as the defending national champions and having to replace their quarterback and top defensive player, the Tigers were ranked in the top ten in the pre-season AP poll.  The lofty expectations are warranted.

The spread offense of Tony Franklin showed good signs in a 23-20 Chick-fil-A Bowl victory over Clemson.  Who will run the show is yet to be decided.  Sophomore Kodi Burns scored a touchdown throwing and running in the bowl game, but will be challenged by JUCO transfer Chris Todd.  Reviews on both players have been positive.  At Auburn, the running backs always play a prominent role.  Senior Brad Lester is ready for a big season and will team with junior Ben Tate, who rushed for 903 yards and eight touchdowns to last season, to form the top one-two punch in the SEC West.  Lester might be more comfortable in this offense, as he will be able to run in space.  A top runner from last season, Mario Fanin, is a player to watch at receiver.  Senior Rodgeriquz Smith returns after catching 52 passes in 2007.  Tommy Trott is a veteran tight end.  The offensive line should be strong.  Guard Tyronne Green and tackle Lee Ziemba lead a unit that is especially agile and mobile. 

The Auburn defense very well may end up being the premier unit in the conference.  A unit which finished sixth in the nation in pass defense a year ago should be quite good once again.  The secondary took a blow when corner Aairon Savage went down with a season-ending injury, but should still be very effective.  Sophomore strong safety Zac Ethridge is the team’s leading returning tackler with 65.  Junior Jerraud Powers and Walter McFadden will have to step up with Savage out.  Both are extremely talented.  Sophomore Mike McNeil is ready for a big season at free safety.  Pressure from the front line will help the secondary and that is where Antonio Coleman excels.  The junior defensive end totaled 8.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss and is a fierce force off the edge.  Senior Sen’Derrick Marks is the ultimate interior anchor.  Marks was named a second-team all-league defender this pre-season, Coleman second-team.  Trey Blackmon is a superb athlete at linebacker.  Look for big numbers from him. 

A new kicker must be found in place of John Vaughn.  Punter Ryan Shoemaker is the best in the league and averaged 42.5 yards per boot as a freshman.  Tristan Davis is a skilled return man.

Key Game – LSU, September 20th

2. LSU – The defending national champions had a magical 2007 season, one where they won four games in October, November and December by a touchdown or less.  Loaded once again, the Tigers will look to defend their crown with arguably the top collection of talent in the nation in the trenches and without quarterback of the future Ryan Perrilloux.

Fair or unfair, all eyes are on the quarterback position.  The dismissal of Perrilloux, who is now at Jacksonville States, means three quarterbacks who have never taken a FBS snap are in the running.  Harvard transfer Andrew Hatch, redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee and true freshman Jordan Jefferson are each vying for the reigns under center.  We may not have a clear picture until a few games into the season.  With so much talent along the offensive lines and at the skill positions, the newcomer may be asked more to manage games than win them.  The offensive line should be tremendous as four starters return.  Mammoth linemen Herman Johnson and Ciron Black earned All-SEC honors last season.  Center Brett Helms is a veteran leader and earned similar honors this pre-season.  At wide receiver, LSU has a number of explosive options.  Demetrius Byrd (see the Auburn game) and Brandon LaFell might be the top one-two tandem in the league.  Trindon Holliday has world-class speed.  Juniors Keiland Williams and Charles Scott will grind out yardage at running back.  Both could be full-time starters just about anywhere in the nation. 

Even with all-everything tackle Glenn Dorsey gone, the Tiger defensive line could be downright scary.  Defensive end Tyson Jackson, 6’5’’, 290 pounds, has been spotted on some pre-season All-American teams, as has tackle Ricky Jean-Francois.  End Kirston Pittman tied for the team lead in tackles for loss last season with 12.5.  Two deep depth is strong across the board.  When thinking about the front line, overwhelming is a word that comes to mind.  Senior Darry Beckwith takes over as the leader at linebacker.  Having a veteran like him roaming the middle of the field is invaluable.  The secondary will feature some new names, though corner Jai Eugene returns.  Keep an eye on safety Chad Jones, a sophomore.  LSU was third in the nation in total defense last season, allowing just 288.8 yards per game.     

Kicker Colt David was named first-team All-SEC last season after converting on 25 of 33 attempts.  All-SEC punter Patrick Fisher must be replaced.  Trindon Holliday is about as good as it gets in the return game.  His track speed is almost unmatched.

3. Alabama – Frustrations mounted last season during a regular-season ending four game losing streak, a stretch which included consecutive losses to Louisiana-Monroe and Auburn.  Behind the division’s best quarterback, improvement is expected in year two under Nick Saban.

Senior signal caller John Parker Wilson has set the school record for touchdown passes in a season in consecutive years.  He threw for 2,846 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2007.  He gives the Crimson Tide a proven veteran under center.  Terry Grant and Glenn Coffee give Alabama good talent in the backfield.  Grant, a workhorse type runner, rushed for almost 900 yards and eight touchdowns as a freshman.  He should find running behind All-American tackle Andre Smith pretty easy.  Arguably the top linemen in the game, Smith is a mauler at the line of scrimmage.  He tied to win the Jacobs Blocking Trophy last fall.  Fellow senior Antoine Caldwell is another bruiser up front.  Mike McCoy, 28 receptions, highlights a thin group of returnees at receiver.  Watch for true freshman Julio Jones. 

Defense is always a staple of Nick Saban football and this year should be no different.  The linebackers should be especially strong.  Sophomore Rolando McClain and junior Prince Hall are two of the top linebackers in the SEC.  Despite starting just eight games, McClain totaled 75 tackles.  He is all-league caliber.  Safety Rashad Johnson could push for All-American honors.  The team’s leading tackler last season with 94, Johnson led the SEC in interceptions with six.  He is a playmaking safety, the type of defender coordinators must scheme around.  Kareem Johnson is a rising star at cornerback.  Up front, replacing the 27.5 tackles for loss of Wallace Gilberry will be difficult. Lorenzo Washington is a powerful interior linemen.   

Kicker Leigh Tiffin is one of the best in the SEC and is back with punter P.J. Fitzgerald.  Return specialist Javier Arenas took a punt return for a touchdown last season and, like Tiffin, will challenge for all-conference honors.

4. Ole Miss – After being the only league team to not win a conference game last season, the Rebels will have a new look in 2008.  Former Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt takes over a squad that will have many new faces. 

Expectations are high for quarterback Jevan Snead, a Texas-transfer who sat out last season and now is penciled in at starter.  A former prep star, Snead has an ideal skills set and a good grasp of the offense.  He will be the centerpiece of a new offense.  You know Nutt will run the football and, though star BenJarvus Green-Ellis is gone, he has some good ones to work with.  True freshman Enrique Davis will join Cordera Eason in the backfield.  Davis was a five-star high school prospect before spending a year at prep school.  Both runners, and Snead, will benefit from having All-American Michael Oher back at offensive tackle.  Oher will lead an offensive line that should be much improved.  The wide receiver rotation is one of the best in the division.  Mike Wallace was tenth in the nation in yards per reception last season at nearly 19 per catch.  Shay Hodge led the team with 43 receptions. 

Junior Greg Hardy is the catalyst of an athletic defense.  Hardy exploded onto the scene last season with ten sacks, the most per game in the SEC.  His 18 tackles for loss were second-best in the league.  Uncontainable in the trenches, Hardy is best avoided by opposing offenses.  The tackle rotation, already strong with Peria Jerry (14 tackles for loss) will get a boost from highly-touted freshman Jerrod Powe.  Linebackers Ashlee Palmer and Tony Fein both return after leading the Rebels in tackles in 2007.  Senior Jamarca Sanford is one of the top defensive backs in the SEC and is a savvy veteran in the defensive backfield.  Dustin Mouzon is a solid cover corner. 

Joshua Shene is back at kicker after earning Freshman All-American honors.  Rob Park takes over at punter.  Mike Wallace, Marshay Green and Dexter McCluster bring excitement to the return game.

Rising Star – Jevan Snead, QB
Key Game – Mississippi State, November 28th

5. Mississippi State – The Bulldogs rallied to their first winning season since 2000 and a 10-3 Liberty Bowl victory over Central Florida.  Sylvester Croom and company will now look for consistency, specifically a trip to the postseason for the second year in a row.

Running back Anthony Dixon is the heart and soul of the Mississippi State offense.  He rushed for 1,064 yards and 14 touchdowns and was second in the league in attempts behind Darren McFadden.  He is strong between-the-tackles runner and thrives as the game goes on.  Improvement is needed in the passing game as the Bulldogs finished 113th in the nation in passing a year ago.  Enter Wesley Carroll.  As a freshman, he came on later in the year and passed for 421 yards and four touchdowns (also four interceptions) in his road finale against Arkansas.  Coaches hope he will provide more productivity under center.  Senior Jamayel Smith gives Carroll a solid number one option at receiver.  He had 510 yards receiving in a run-oriented offense, including 10 catches for 208 yards against Arkansas.  Guard Anthony Strauder leads the offensive line.

The State defense was the linchpin of the team in 2007.  Six times the unit held opponents to 15 points or less.  Safety Derek Pegues might be the best defensive playmaker in the league.  The All-SEC senior has nine interceptions and five touchdowns the last two seasons.  Pegues and Keith Fitzhugh are a great safety combination.  Like South Carolina and Auburn, Mississippi State was a top ten defense in the nation in pass defense last season.  Linebacker Jamar Chaney is an all-conference caliber defender.  He recorded 89 tackles last season, tops on the team.  Athletic Dominic Douglas, second on the team with 78 stops, is back as well.  The defensive line needs a difference maker to emerge as end Titus Brown is gone. 

Derek Pegues is an elite return man.  He has over 2,000 total yards the last two seasons.  Kicker Adam Carlson is back after an efficient 2007 season.  Punter Blake McAdams returns.

6. Arkansas – This fall will bring a new season and an entirely new way of doing things for the Razorbacks.  Bobby Petrino takes over and brings his pass happy style to Fayetteville.  Gone are Darren McFadden and Felix Jones and in are three and four wide out sets.
Offensively, the Razorbacks strength is along the offensive line.  Senior center Jonathan Luigs anchors a solid front five.  He is everyone’s All-American.  Guard Mitch Petrus and tackle Jose Valdez are the other returning starters.  Senior quarterback Casey Dick will be called on to use his arm much more this fall.  Dick’s 57% completion rate must go up to run Petrino’s system effectively, but he did quietly throw 18 touchdowns last fall.  Big question marks come at wide reciever as no returning wideout caught more than fourteen passes last year.  Junior London Crawford projects to be the leader of an overall young group where a few freshman will play now.  Tight end Ben Cleveland may be the most reliable pass catcher returning but may be asked to block more instead.  Running back Michael Smith would appear to be in contention with freshman De’Anthony Curtis for carries.
Defensively, just five starters return.  A spring suspension of linebacker Freddie Fairchild leaves a void.  He totaled 75 tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss in 2007 and paced the team in sacks with 4.5.  In his absence, Elston Forte and Wendel Davis will have to step up at linebacker.  The defensive line should provide a solid pass rush with ends Antwain Robinson and Adrian Davis.  Tackles Ernest Mitchell and Malcom Sheppard combined for 21 tackles for loss in 2007.  The secondary is led by junior saftey Rashaad Johnson.  Jamar Love, Jerell Norton and Walner Leandre should round out the secondary.  All for starters in the backfield are upperclassmen, but none have started more than six games in a season.
Sophomore kicker Alex Tejada returns after a solid freshman campaign.  Senior Jeremy Davis will once again handle the punting.  Jerell Norton, Michael Smith and Reggie Fish may all get a look returning kicks.
