Appalachian State handed Louisiana its first conference loss by upsetting the Ragin’ Cajuns 35-16.

LAFAYETTE, La. — Marcus Cox rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns to lead Appalachian State over Louisiana-Lafayette 35-16 on Saturday.

Appalachian State (6-5, 5-2 Sun Belt) raced out to a 14-3 first quarter lead on an 8-yard run by Cox and Bobo Beathard’s 33-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Lafayette (7-4, 6-1) responded in the second with Elijah McGuire’s 8-yard touchdown run and Hunter Stover’s second field goal of the day, a 26-yard kick as time expired in the half, and the Ragin’ Cajuns trailed by a point at intermission.

It was almost all Appalachian State after the break.

Taylor Lamb found Montez McGuire from 40 yards to extend the Mountaineers lead to 21-13, but Stover’s third field goal, from 33 yards, made it a 5-point game late in the third.

The Mountaineers scored twice in the fourth on Cox’s 2-yard plunge and Terrance Upshaw’s 36-yard jaunt.
