The Georgia Southern Eagles began conference competition in Moscow, Idaho with a bang. Fans are hoping that the 44-20 win against the Idaho Vandals will be a bit of foreshadowing for the remainder of the season. While the Eagles and their fans are looking ahead to upcoming conference play, they also look back, reflecting on last years conference winning season. Last years success keeps fans optimistic. That optimism is also fed by this seasons success, thus far. Although it is still early in the season, the Eagles already lead the Sunbelt with a record of 3-1.
Momentum is the name of the game for the Eagles. That drive the Eagles are gaining from week to week, paired with their confidence in their position in the conference could keep them at the top of the Sunbelt for the second consecutive year. The Eagles first year in the Sunbelt Conference showed that once they gain momentum, they are nearly unstoppable.
Maintaining their energy from last years conference championship win, the Eagles’ game against the Vandals was their ninth consecutive conference win. The Eagles ability to feed off their previous weeks success is also directly shown on the field. In other words, the Eagles also gain and maintain momentum from play to play in each game. In particular, the contest against the Vandals showed the Eagles drive increase in the second half.
Next, the Eagles take on the ULM Warhawks in Monroe, Louisiana. Although traveling to Monroe has proven to be a tough trip in the past, they will be looking to solidify their position in the Sunbelt with another win. The duo of Kevin Ellison and Matt Breida, the latter of whom leads the team and the conference in rushing touchdowns, will give the Warhawks a run for their money. The Eagles will attempt to extend their conference winning streak to double digits, Saturday in Malone Stadium at 7 p.m.
