Boston College wins by 20 points in Jeff Hafley’s first game with the Eagles.
1. What a debut for new Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley. Tied at the break, the Eagles outscored Duke 16-0 in the second half en route to a 26-6 win. Boston College’s offense compiled 440 yards of total offense and held the football for over 36 minutes, while the Eagles held the Blue Devils scoreless for the game’s final 46:59. That performance was certainly one to build on for Hafley and Boston College.
2. What a debut for new Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec. The Notre Dame-transfer was outstanding, completing 17-of-23 passes for 300 yards. He threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Long and a 61-yard touchdown pass Zay Flowers. Jurkovec’s proficiency was the theme of the game, allowing the Eagles to keep Duke’s defense off balance. The Eagles were slowed some in the ground game, but Jurkovec consistently pushed the football downfield.
3. Formerly the defensive coordinator at Ohio State, Hafley’s Boston College defense was very effective against Duke quarterback Chase Brice. Isaiah McDuffie and Jahmin Muse both recorded interceptions. Brice was held to 23-of-42 passing for only 217 yards, an average of just 5.2 yards per attempt. The Eagles’ scheme and play prevented him from getting comfortable or settling in.
4. Zay Flowers is a game-changer. He caught five passes for 162 yards and the aforementioned 61-yard touchdown. Flowers’ afternoon average was a stunning 32.4 yards per reception. After a promising freshman season, he is continuing to impress. Flowers is the type of player who puts a lot of pressure on opposing defenses.
5. Duke edge rusher Victor Dimukeje is a big-time NFL prospect and Saturday showed why. He was active and everywhere against Boston College, recording 3.5 sacks. Dimukeje is one of the nation’s best.
