The Seminole spear is pointing forward; Terry is at the tip.

College football hasn’t seen many playmakers quite like Florida State’s Tamorrion Terry. The redshirt junior has 95 career catches for 1,932 yards and 17 touchdowns, averaging a remarkable 20.33 yards per reception. Terry has at least one grab in each of his 25 games, including multiple catches in all but one of them. In addition to announcing his decision to return to Tallahassee for another season, Terry recently posted on social media that he has added 15 pounds to his 6’4” frame. Having already made history, more may be on the horizon.

Terry, before even taking a single upperclassman snap, is in some pretty rare company. He is one of just six wide receivers this millennium to average over 20 yards per catch on at least 95 career receptions. Through changes at offensive coordinator and quarterback in Tallahassee, Terry, still fine-tuning his craft, has been one of the premier wide receivers in the country.

Projections point towards even more production; Terry finished with 27 receptions for 542 yards over his last four games alone. Like his nickname suggests, Terry, for opposing defenses, is “scary”.

In 2018, Terry turned heads by breaking a Florida State freshman receiving yards record, with 744, that had stood for over 40 years. He became the first Seminole in two decades with two 70-yard touchdown catches in a season, which tied for the ACC lead. Terry ranked fifth nationally with 21.26 yards per catch, also averaging 39.1 yards per score. Among other big plays, he caught a 74-yard game-winner with less than two minutes remaining against Boston College. A prolific precedent was set.

What Terry did a year ago further validated him as one of the best in the game. His 1,188 yards ranked second in the ACC, as well as his 19.8 yards per catch. Terry’s downfield proficiency was truly generational; he averaged an NCAA-leading 57.9 yards per score, the highest average in the last 15 years among receivers with at least nine touchdowns. In Terry’s last performance, the Sun Bowl versus Arizona State, he set new career bests with nine catches for 165 yards.

At a place where legends like Fred Biletnikoff and Ron Sellers, Anquan Boldin, Snoop Minnis and Peter Warrick made plays, Terry, learning from a program great in Ron Dugans, is making a name for himself.

With experience added to his repertoire, Terry, one of the faces of this Florida State program, moves into a prominent leadership role. A year ago he represented the Seminoles at the ACC Kickoff in Charlotte; now Terry will be on magazine covers and media guides. Along with fellow standout Marvin Wilson at tackle, Terry turned down the NFL for another season in garnet and gold. Even with a chance to be remembered as one of the all-time greats, Terry is working hard for yet another level still.

Enter former Memphis head coach Mike Norvell, now at Florida State. His Tiger offenses ranked in the top ten nationally each of the last three years. Norvell, a former wide receiver at Central Arkansas himself, has a penchant for playmakers; Terry, already knocking on the door of 2,000 career yards, is just that. He continues to be a player to watch. Terry’s rise in the offense of Norvell and former Auburn offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham will one of the biggest storylines in the ACC.
Before taking the field this fall, Terry, with Wilson, gave Norvell and Florida State a major boost in forgoing the NFL Draft. Terry has the Seminoles sprinting into the off-season.

While the professional ranks obviously await for an impressive athlete with prototypical skills, Terry has plenty of work left to do in college football first. He, after a late fumble on a running play in the Sun Bowl, was quick to take accountability and talk improvement post-game. Terry, looking ahead, is currently leading Florida State’s charge. This spring, he will be a leading name for Norvell’s new team.

The Seminole spear is pointing forward; Terry is at the tip. His return is the foundation of much of what Florida State hopes to do.

One of the best wide receivers in all of college football is back. For Terry, an impressive start to his career is only the beginning.
