Jameis Winston was involved in a bench-clearing incident when the Seminoles played rival Florida.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) x94 Florida State’s Jameis Winston managed to see some action on the baseball diamond even though he didn’t play in any of the Seminoles’ four games last week.
Winston was involved in a bench-clearing incident when the Seminoles played rival Florida.
The Seminoles and Gators met Tuesday and the benches cleared after Florida State outfielder DJ Stewart had a first-base line collision with pitcher Danny Young. Gators first baseman Zack Powers approached Stewart, who shoved Powers with two hands. All three were ejected and both Powers and Stewart received four-game suspensions.
No punches were thrown as players from both sides poured onto the field, but Winston and others were restrained by coaches and police officers.
The Heisman winner did not make the trip to face Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Boston College, instead participating in spring football practice Thursday and Saturday.
Winston isn’t scheduled to miss any other baseball series’ because of football, but the spring game coincides with a weekend series at Georgia Tech. The plan is for him to travel back to Florida after the Georgia Tech game on Friday and travel back to Atlanta after the spring game Saturday afternoon.
A look at how the 20-year-old sophomore fared last week:
___
ON THE SEASON: He has four hits in 19 at-bats and is batting .211; on the mound he has pitched 13.0 innings, struck out 13 of the 45 batters he’s faced, has given up six hits, one walk and has four saves with a 0.69 ERA. Winston is the only Seminole to record a save this season.
ON DECK: Florida State hosts Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday before returning to ACC action during the weekend when Notre Dame visits the Seminoles for a three-game series.
QUOTABLE: “He’s going to play next weekend,” football coach Jimbo Fisher said about Winston’s baseball schedule. “He’ll be able to go back and forth.”
