We asked our staff to submit a predicted order of finish for the 2016 ACC football season. The following are the culmination of those votes. Clemsonreceived the most votes to win the ACC Championship.
ACC Atlantic
1. Clemson | Any questions on defense are far superseded by the sheer offensive firepower. With Watson at the helm, Clemson trots out likely the best, most well-rounded attack in college football.
2. Florida State | Florida State is arguably even more talented than Clemson, aside from the quarterback position. One of the best defenses in the country will give Florida States offense time to gel. The schedule is downright nasty, though.
3. Louisville | In spite of a couple of key losses,Louisville will continue to have one of the fastest, most versatile, pass rushing teams in the ACC. Their success will largely depend upon Lamar Jackson taking steps forward as a signal caller.
4. NC State | A ton of turnover on offense makes for low expectations in Raleigh. However, playmakers Matt Dayes and Jaylen Samuels are good enough to make the most of the talent around them.
5. Syracuse | Dino Babers brings with him a rip-roaring offense that, when run correctly, is effectively unstoppable. Still, there will be an adjustment period, and the defense has a few holes.
6. Boston College | Even with that defense, the offense was a nightmare in 2015. Patrick Towles and Jon Hilliman should give that unit some stability, but the how much is still anyones guess.
7. Wake Forest | There is hope that the Deacons can continue to move in the right direction under Dave Clawson. A relatively favorable schedule and a plethora of returning talent could point to just that. |
ACC Coastal
1. Miami | On paper, Miami is as talented as almost anyone. With significant depth issues, however, Mark Richt will need a little luck to succeed in his first season leading the Hurricanes.
2. North Carolina | A much more challenging schedule from a year ago will put the Tar Heels recent success to the test. A steadily improving defense bodes well for the coming year, but Mitch Trubisky is still somewhat of an unknown at quarterback.
3. Virginia Tech | The Hokies have real firepower on offense, with Travon McMillian, Isaiah Ford, and Bucky Hodges. Bud Foster needs to prove that he still has it after maybe his worst defense ever, in 2015.
4. Pittsburgh | Like Miami, Pittsburgh has studs littered throughout the team, but depth is an issue. This team should be even better than it was in 2015, but the record may not reflect that due to a rather challenging playing slate.
5. Georgia Tech | The Jackets are an enigma. They experienced a significant fall from grace, last season. Only time will tell if that was a fluke, or a sign of things to come.
6. Duke | Duke could sneak up on people in 2016, if they can stay healthy. Look for T.J. Rahming to have a breakout year.
7. Virginia | Bronco Mendenhall is in for a difficult transition. He took BYU to eleven consecutive bowl appearances. That will likely come to an end in his inaugural season with the Cavs. |
