The top five highlights from Jameis Winston’s freshman season with the Seminoles.
1. Game-winning touchdown pass in BCS Championship Game — A two-yard scoring strike generally isn’t that big of a deal. When it is the game-winner with 13 seconds left in the national championship game, it’s a moment for the history books. With Florida State trailing 31-27, Winston found 6’5” receiver Kelvin Benjamin on a quick slant in the endzone. The ball was thrown high, where only Benjamin could get it, and the Seminoles claimed the crown.
2. End-of-half Heave at Boston College — Tied 17-17 with enough time for one more play before intermission, Winston snapped the ball from his own 45-yard line with a running clock ticking from one second to zero, broke two tackles and stepped into an oncoming pass rusher to connect, on a line, with Kenny Shaw as he fell into the BC endzone.
3. Spin-and-score pass against Maryland — In Winston’s first game against a ranked opponent, he showed off his athleticism and strength with a remarkable 12-yard touchdown pass after what seemed like a sure sack. When the pocket collapsed, Winston spun out of a tackle, ran away from another and connected with Nick O’Leary in the back corner of the endzone against the Terrapins.
4. Falling down throw versus Bethune-Cookman — Similar to the play against Maryland, Winston wrestled his way out of a blitzer’s potential sack and staggered his way towards before finding Kelvin Benjamin on an 11-yard touchdown strike as he was falling down.
5. Downfield block for Kermit against Syracuse — Speedy Kermit Whitfield, famous for his 100-yard kickoff return against Auburn, scored on a 74-yard sweep versus the Orange. After sprinting 40 yards towards the endzone, Winston delivered the final block on the play.
