Diggs’ commitment is absolutely huge for Maryland head coach Randy Edsall, who has made in-state recruiting a major point of emphasis.

In what many recruiting experts would consider a surprise, the nation’s No. 2 wide receiver prospect in the class of 2012, Stefon Diggs, signed his letter of intent to play college football at the University of Maryland earlier this afternoon.

Diggs’ commitment is absolutely huge for Maryland head coach Randy Edsall, who has made it a point of emphasis to attempt to persuade elite Maryland prospects to come play their college football in College Park. Although his plan got off to a rocky start, Edsall and his staff closed the 2012 class on an extremely strong note, signing four-star in-state running backs Albert Reid and Wes Brown in the month leading up to Signing Day, before landing Diggs’ services today.

Maryland was the last school to receive an official visit from Diggs, which very well may have played a major role in his ultimate decision. Heading into today, many experts believed that Auburn, Florida and Ohio State were the top three teams, but it appears that location was a big reason that Diggs decided to take his talents to College Park.

“I want to win championships and what’s a better place to do it than in your city,” Diggs said of signing with the Terrapins.

After a disappointing season on the gridiron this past fall, Diggs is the caliber of athlete that the Terrapins will need to become major contenders in the ACC Atlantic. Many Maryland fans were very upset with how Coach Edsall performed in his first year at the school, but they are sure to be more lenient with the coach if he continues to reel in elite recruits from the Maryland area.

Wide receiver was a major position of weakness for the Terrapins in 2011, so don’t be surprised if Diggs strolls out with the starters during the Terrapin’s season opener in 2012.
