The ink may be dry for most prospects, but the book is not completely closed.
National Signing Day is over, but not every recruit from the class of 2012 has made their decision. One player that is still undecided is five-star WR Stefon Diggs, the second ranked WR in the country on Rivals. Stefon will be making his college choice known on February 10th. He will be choosing between Florida, Ohio State, Auburn, and his hometown school, Maryland. He plans on taking a visit to Maryland’s campus this weekend since he has already visited Florida, Ohio State, and Auburn. Diggs is a very physical and athletic wide receiver that should make a big impact at whichever school he picks.
At the beginning of his recruitment, Florida was not regarded as a potential landing place for the star wide receiver, but that all changed after Diggs visited Florida’s campus for their annual Friday Night Lights camp. The Florida staff was very impressed with Diggs and it looked as if he returned the feeling. In the minds of many experts, it seemed like a match made in football heaven, but that all changed when Charlie Weis left. Weis’ departure allowed other schools an opportunity to catch up to Florida, but all hope was not lost.
All Will Muschamp had to do was hire an offensive coordinator that was capable of running a pro-style passing attack on a collegiate level. He hired Brent Pease. Pease was just the guy they were looking for. His offense at Boise State was ranked 10th nationally in total offense, 11th in passing offense, and 4th in passing efficiency. Publically, Diggs was very supportive of the hire and appeared satisfied with Florida’s choice.
Florida is a strong candidate to land Diggs’ signature, but will their efforts be enough to fight off Urban Meyer? The same fans that praised Meyer for his recruiting efforts at Florida are now cursing him. It seems that Meyer has made the Buckeyes a strong contender in the race to land Stefon Diggs despite Diggs’ earlier comments that he would prefer to play in a pro-style offense. If Meyer is able to secure Diggs, the betrayal will sting more than ever for Gator fans because Florida has a huge need for playmaking wide receivers. Florida fans will not easily forget it if Urban is the reason that they are lacking increased depth and talent at that position in 2012. They will also remember that it was Meyer that left the Gators with their current depth chart woes, despite his reputation as a phenomenal recruiter.
Losing out on five-star athlete Nelson Agholor makes Florida’s need for another wide receiver even greater. With less than a week left until his decision, Florida must do everything in their power to gain the commitment of Stefon Diggs. Diggs would be an excellent addition to Florida’s already promising recruiting class. Winning Diggs’ signature would help the Florida Gators significantly strengthen the future of their offense. For these reasons, Will Muschamp and Brent Pease hope that Diggs will be chomping on the 10th.
