The Shrine Bowl, which is held in Spartanburg, S.C. is the oldest and longest running all-star football game in the country and has become a week-long event for recruiters and coaches to scout the players.
While speculation and rumors are running wild about who will be selected for the game which is televised on ESPN in December, only one player has made public that he’s been selected.
The quarterback class of 2011 is loaded in both North Carolina and South Carolina and there are over a dozen prospects for the game, but so far only Georgia Tech bound quarterback Vad Lee has announced that he’s been selected.
Other quarterbacks expected to make the team is Marquise Williams from Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, and Channecy Concepcion from Providence High School in Charlotte, Everett Golson from Myrtle Beach, and Justin Worley from Northwestern High School in Rock Hill.
The highest profile recruit expected to be selected is defensive end Jadeveon Clowney from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill. Clowney is the number one rated defensive end in the country and has amazing athleticism and explosiveness off the ball.
Clowney has been offered by every major school in the country but is leaning the hardest towards Alabama and South Carolina.
Ben Councell from A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville is expected to join Anson County linebacker Stephone Anthony on the roster to lead the Tar Heels defense while Adam Humphries from Dorman and Gerald Dixon from Northwestern are expected to be announced to the roster for South Carolina.
Stay tuned over the next few weeks as I break down the rosters and try to dissect the teams and provide a roadmap of what players will be attending colleges in the South.
