SouthernPigskin.com Contributor Luke Stampini releases SoFLAFootball’s Top 80 south Florida prospects.
The winter camps, combines, and 7-on-7’s have been finished. The spring practices, scrimmages, and games just came to an end. Now SoFLAfootball ranks the top players from Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties in the 2011 class.
*Each player has been seen in person participate in a game, camp, combine, 7-on-7, or practice.
1. Nick O’Leary 6′4″ 240 TE Dwyer: O’Leary brings an excellent combination of athleticism, strength, sure hands, and blue-collar attitude to the field. His frame has really filled out.
2. Kelvin Benjamin 6′6″ 215 WR Glades Central: Benjamin proves a tough matchup with his height and strength on the outside. His hands have improved showing he’s capable of catching the ball in traffic as well as making adjustments to poorly thrown balls.
3. Curt Maggitt 6′3″ 210 DE Dwyer: Maggitt can flat out get after the passer better than anyone else in South Florida. His supreme athleticism also makes it a possibility he will be used to drop into coverage as well at the next level.
4. Teddy Bridgewater 6′3″ 170 QB Northwestern: Bridgewater oozes natural talent on the football field with uncanny elusiveness, strong arm, and better than average speed at the quarterback position. If he is able to polish up his skills and decision-making at the next level, the sky could be the limit for Bridgewater.
5. Bobby Hart 6′4″ 285 OL St. Thomas Aquinas: Hart is coming into his own on the offensive line. His size, athleticism, and improved technique make him the top offensive lineman in South Florida.
6. Marcus Roberson 6′1″ 175 DB St. Thomas Aquinas: Roberson has supreme athleticism and the versatility to play either cornerback or safety at the next level. What separates him from other defensive backs is the fact he has very good hands, helping him come up with interceptions.
7. Rashad Greene 6′0″ 175 WR St. Thomas Aquinas: Greene has the speed, size, and athletic ability to be a top flight outside receiver at the next level. Look for his play to take another step forward this coming fall.
8. Kent Turene 6′2″ 230 LB Boyd Anderson: Turene is build like a prototypical inside backer and has better than average speed for a linebacker manning the middle. His ability in pass coverage may be his most impressive asset.
9. Phillip Dorsett 5′9″ 170 WR St. Thomas Aquinas: Dorsett has a knack for making big plays and is a very polished route runner. He has battled some drop balls, but still proved tough to cover.
10. Bryant Dubose 6′4″ 235 DE Northeast: Dubose has the ideal frame for a defensive end and impressive athleticism to boot. You would like Dubose to dominate games on a more consistent basis as the tools are there for him do that.
11. Ricardo Williams 6′4″ 210 DE Homestead: Williams is a bit raw rushing the passer, getting by on his excellent athleticism. Once he polishes up his game and fills out his lean frame, he could be the steal of the class.
12. Wayne Lyons 5′11″ 190 S Dillard: Lyons is a talented football player that is at his best inside the box. His character off the field only adds to the positives his play on the football field has.
13. Gerrod Holliman 6′0″ 190 S Southridge: Holliman is a versatile safety that excels at both at strong safety or free safety. He has good mobility on the football field.
14. Denzel Perryman 5′11″ 215 LB Coral Gables: Perryman moves very well for a linebacker and can deliver big hits. You would like to see Perryman continue his solid play regular season play into the postseason.
15. Ryan Shazier 6′1″ 200 DE/LB Plantation: Shazier has elite athleticism and is a talented football player. The question surrounding Shazier is can he transition from defensive end to outside linebacker in college.
16. Corey Tindal 5′10″ 170 ATH Boyd Anderson: Tindal can impact the game from many different positions including cornerback, running back, safety, receiver and as a return man. It looks as if cornerback may be Tindal’s best position at the next level.
17. Kevin Grooms 5′10″ 170 CB/RB South Broward: Grooms is an electric athlete that excels in the return game, running the ball, as well as a cornerback. His technique at corner needs to improve, but that is most likely his position at the next level.
18. Tre Mason 5′9″ 180 RB Park Vista: Mason is a patient runner that waits for a crease to open before he bursts up field. His ability to catch the ball out of the backfield is another weapon he has in his arsenal.
19. Jabari Gorman 5′10″ 170 S Monsignor Pace: Gorman is one of the hardest hitters in South Florida and makes plenty of plays roaming the secondary. His lack of size is the only concern regarding Gorman at the safety position.
20. Robenson Therezie 5′10″ 175 S Miami Jackson: Therezie is yet another hard hitting undersized safety. He also excels as a running back on offense.
21. Anthony Rabasa 6′3″ 225 DE Columbus: Rabasa has good size and plays with a good motor on the field.
22. Elkino Watson 6′2″ 265 DT Booker T. Washington: Watson is a big athletic two-way lineman that is able to cause havoc in the backfield.
23. Shaun Ward 6′1″ 225 OLB/DE Boyd Anderson: Ward is a big, fast player that is at his best when rushing the passer.
24. Mile Pace 6′1″ 235 DL/LB Miami Central: Pace is a player trying to find a true position, but he excels at linebacker, defensive end and defensive tackle.
25. Mike Matulis 6′6″ 270 OT Park Vista: Matulis has made huge strides in his play over the offseason and one that could possibly move up the rankings quickly with continued improvements.
26. Eli Rogers 5′10″ 170 WR Northwestern: Rogers fits into the slot receiver role nicely having a knack to find the holes in a defense.
27. Tacoi Sumler 5′8″ 160 WR Columbus: Sumler has great speed and can make an impact in the return game.
28. Cody Preble 6′4″ 285 OL Park Vista: Preble moves well at his guard position and is fairly sound in his technique.
29. Jerrard Randall 6′1″ 175 QB Chaminade-Madonna: Randall has a live arm and is able to hurt defenses with his legs.
30. Jacoby Brissett 6′4″ 215 QB Dwyer: Brissett has the tools to be the best quarterback in the area, but his commitment to basketball may have stunted his growth on the gridiron.
31. Jerron Seymour 5′5″ 210 RB Hialeah: Seymour is a talented runner with good speed, strength, and vision with the ball in his hands.
32. Craig Wilkins 5′10″ 165 WR Hialeah: Wilkins plays bigger than his size having the ability to go up over defensive backs as well as stretching the defense vertically.
33. Chavis Akins 6′3″ 320 DT Homestead: Akins is a true space eater on the interior of the defensive line, but his conditioning still needs to improve.
34. Robert Way 6′2″ 190 DE/OLB Glades Central: Way makes plenty of plays on the field, but another athletic player that probably has to transition to outside linebacker at the next level.
35. Ruben Carter 6′4″ 265 DT/OL Miami Jackson: Carter is a two-way lineman new to the game of football.
36. Niles Lawarence-Stample 6′1″ 295 DT Nova: Lawrance-Stample has a great looking build, but needs to bring consistent effort on the field.
37. Keeon Virgile 6′1″ 215 LB North Miami Beach: Virgile is a talented linebacker with a build to add plenty more weight.
38. Jake Rudock 6′3″ 180 QB St. Thomas Aquinas: Rudock has a strong arm, runs well, and has a good understanding of what is expected of him in an offense.
39. Harmon Brown 5′8″ 160 CB Boyd Anderson: Brown has good speed and hips to stick to receivers despite lacking ideal size.
40. Andrew Johnson 5′9″ 160 CB Southridge: Johnson is another undersized cornerback that is good in coverage.
41. Tevin Westbrook 6′5″ 230 DL Undecided
