The best win of the college football season belongs to Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M.

When Alabama took a seven-point lead on a touchdown pass and two-point conversion from Bryce Young to Jameson Williams with 5:00 remaining, it looked like the Crimson Tide were closing in on their 20th consecutive victory. Alabama had promptly scored 21 points in a row and, even on the road, seemingly had all of the momentum. It was then, however, that Texas A&M played with the poise of a championship team. From that point on, the Aggies responded with a touchdown drive, a three-and-out and a walk-off game-winning kick.

Texas A&M rallied to ten straight points to beat the number one team in the nation for the third time ever, send College Station into a frenzy and send college football into chaos. In the process, Jimbo Fisher became the only former assistant to beat Nick Saban, the first in 25 tries.

In a game that had it all, including a blocked punt for a touchdown promptly followed by a corresponding kickoff return for score, quarterback Zach Calzada was the catalyst for the upset win. His late 25-yard touchdown strike to Ainias Smith was a legacy-builder. The redshirt freshman stood tall in the pocket and threw a perfect pass to Smith on a corner route. Standing tall in the picket, Calzada suffered a hit to the leg on the play. He was down on the field after throwing for the signature score and entered Texas A&M’s injury tent.

Calzada, with a walk-on quarterback warming up on the sidelines, ultimately returned to the field. He then promptly helped make history.

After a strong defensive stand, Texas A&M got the football with 2:00 remaining and the game tied. Calzada connected with Isaiah Spiller for 17 yards on a 2nd-and-15. He ran for another first down on the very next play. After another 12-yard pass to Spiller, and the Aggies in field goal position, Calzada threw a one-on-one jump ball to Jalen Wydermyer, drawing and a pass inteference call and drawing Texas A&M closer to an all-time victory. Seth Small converted on a 28-yard field goal mere moments later.

Poised play from Calzada and aggressive play-calling from Fisher helped the Aggies to a storied finish. On a night to remember, Texas A&M’s two-touchdown first half advantage won’t be the story that stands the test of time; how the Aggies closed out the game will be talked about for years. Few teams build a substantial lead on Alabama. Even fewer respond after the Crimson Tide do themselves. Texas A&M was the last team standing. It’s a spotlight the Aggies earned. Thousands of fans were soon on the field right with them.

The best win of the college football season belongs to Fisher and Texas A&M. In a season where the Aggies haven’t always been at their best, they were when it mattered most.
