The Citadel edges Wofford 24-21 in overtime in a key league game.
n1. What a great football game. It took overtime to separate The Citadel and Wofford, with the Bulldogs ultimately prevailing 24-21 in Spartanburg. In a contest between teams that are stylistically similar, the finish was as close as could be. Credit The Citadel for making the defining plays late. The Bulldogs, who rallied from down 13-0 in the third quarter, have played with poise when it matters most this season as they are now 5-0 in games decided by one score.xc2xa0
n2. The Citadel took another big step towards a Southern Conference championship with the victory. Now 7-0 overall for the first team inxc2xa0program historyxc2xa0and 5-0 in league play, the Bulldogs have three conference games remaining, just one on the road. Having already beaten Chattanooga and the Terriers, The Citadel will finish in-league with East Tennessee, Samford and at VMI down the home stretch. At this point, the Bulldogs have earned the distinction as the favorite to win the SoCon.
n3. Defensive back Kailik Williams arguably made the play of the day for The Citadel, returning an interception 13 yards for a game-tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Prior to that pick, Wofford had the football, with the lead, looking to run out of the clock. Two key defensive stops before the interception forced the Terriers into a passing situation. Not to be outdone, Quinlan Washington blocked Wofford’s potential game-winning field goal at the end of regulation, Cody Clark made his overtime field goal and Joe Crochet forced a fumble on the Terriers’ corresponding possession, which Ben Roberts recovered.xc2xa0xc2xa0xc2xa0xc2xa0
n4. Late in the third quarter, with the Bulldogs down 13-0, Reggie Williams came through with a critical touchdown run. There weren’t many big plays offensively in the game, but his 34-yard rush on 4th down got The Citadel on the board and provided some much-needed momentum.xc2xa0
n5. Missed opportunities and mistakes hurt Wofford in a game where the Terriers outgained The Citadel by over 100 total yards. Four turnovers obviously proved costly.
