Former Vanderbilt quarterback Johnny McCrary, who transferred to Mercer during the offseason after losing out on the starting job with Commodores, has elected to give up football and focus on his academics, according to a report from the Macon-Telegraph.
A former four-star prospect that played his high school football at Cedar Grove in the metro-Atlanta area, McCrary arrived in Macon with plenty of hype and with two years of collegiate eligibility remaining.
Ultimately, though, McCrary appeared to be on the outside looking in for the starting quarterback position, as John Russ seemingly had a strong grip on that role.
In his two seasons with the Commodores, McCrary started 12 contests, throwing for 2,518 yards and 15 touchdowns with 20 interceptions.
McCrary has elected to leave the Mercer completely, as he will continue his academic career at nearby Clark Atlanta.
