Samford gets a late victory at Wofford.
nSamford games have had many dramatic made-for-TV moments as the Bulldogs have now played in five consecutive one-score contests.
nUnfortunately, for Samford, three of four games entering Saturday had resulted in close losses. On the road at Wofford, the Bulldogs made the key plays late to get an important 27-24 Southern Conference victory. After an overtime defeat versus East Tennessee State and a three-point loss at Mercer in consecutive weeks, Samford moved back to .500 by through purpose and persistence. For the first time in some time, the Bulldogs got the breaks.
nKicker Zach Williams made what-proved-to-be the game-winning field goal with 1:38 remaining. Getting the football at their own 37-yard line with less than five minutes to play in a tied game, one where the Terriers had rallied to 17 straight points, Samford ultimately responded by driving into Wofford territory to setup the late conversion. A corresponding missed kick from the Terriers then gave Samford the hard-fought, much-needed win.
nIn a showdown with 1,020 total yards, the big plays down the stretch were made by the Bulldogs.
nWith the boost of a clutch win, Chris Hatcher and Samford next have matchups with Chattanooga and VMI, both of which have just one SoCon loss. The Mocs upset ETSU on Saturday and the Keydets are the defending league champion from the spring season. Upcoming challenges will come with upcoming opportunities for the Bulldogs. Samford moves forward with momentum.
