Another Wofford game, another Wofford win.
nMake it nine straight regular season FCS wins for Wofford, which opened its 2021 spring Southern Conference schedule with a convincing 35-14 victory over Mercer.
nThe Terriers, who have made the playoffs four years in a row and advanced in three of those trips, remain one of the national standards for success and consistency. Saturday was another example, with Wofford taking a 17-0 lead into halftime and never looking back. The end result was over 200 yards rushing, over nine yards per pass attempt, eight tackles for loss and an eighth straight league triumph.
nPreseason favorites per SoCon coaches, the Terriers opened their adjusted 2021 slate with an affirming performance.xc2xa0
nEven after the retirement of the legendary Mike Ayers, who led Wofford for 30 years and made ten postseason appearances along the way, the Terriers have remained a contender. Josh Conklin, who took over for Ayers in 2018, is now 18-8 at Wofford, 18-6 against FCS competition and 14-3 in league play. The Terriers have been directly in the mix nationally, beating Elon in the first round of the 2018 playoffs before losing to Kennesaw State by three points, then falling to the Owls by seven points in the opening round in 2019.
nWofford was a fixture in pre-season spring polls. As has usually been in the case, the Terriers just looked the part.
nEach week will be a barometer for Wofford and every other team in the SoCon as this unprecedented spring season progresses. Up next for the Terriers is a road test with Chattanooga; the last game between the Wofford and the Mocs was a 35-34 overtime classic that came down to the final play, a dramatic victory for the Terriers. Pundits are already looking forward to a regular season grand finale at Furman, a showdown which will likely have conference and national implications.
nAnother Wofford game, another Wofford win. This victory was the program’s 100th at Gibbs Stadium. It was a triumph that tells the tale for the Terriers, as the team’s Twitter referenced post-game.xc2xa0
