Five questions for Tyson Summers and his staff to address this spring.
1. Tyson Summers has made a point of emphasizing an expanded passing game. Granted, he will continue to run the triple option, citing it as the Eagles bread and butter. Weve heard this song and dance before, though. Will Summers have the wherewithal to stick to the pass through some inevitable adversity, or will he scrap it as quickly as Fritz did?
2. What will Georgia Southern look like behind center? With both Kevin Ellison and Favian Upshaw coming back, Tyson Summers has a bit of a QB conundrum on his hands. Ellison has been a more than capable starter for the past couple of years, but Upshaws dominating GoDaddy Bowl showing begs the question: will Summers utilize a dual-quarterback system, similar to his predecessor, or favor one single signal caller?
3. Who will step into Matt Dobsons role as the de facto leader of the defense? Whereas Georgia Southern has a ton coming back on offense there are some glaring holes to fill on the defensive side of the football. More important than filling any single positional need, however, is the need to fill the leadership void.
4. Tyson Summers defense at Colorado State was one of the nations top ten units when it came to defending the pass. Georgia Southerns pass defense was fine in 2015, but hardly top ten caliber. Taking into account all of the losses in the Eagles secondary, it seems hard to imagine that this will be something that Summers can continue to hang his hat on. To what extent will Summers prowess at scheming against opponents passing games be able to overcome the lack of experience in his new defensive backfield?
5. Like it or not, a coaching change means trickle down changes from the top of a program to the bottom. New styles, schemes, and techniques take getting used to and the transition isnt always smooth sailing. How smooth will the new Georgia Southern brass make this transition for the players?
