The Chanticleers, just over one month into the season, are already bowl eligible.
Another game, another big win for Coastal Carolina. Having won a remarkable 18 regular season contests in a row after Thursday’s 52-20 victory over Arkansas State, the Chanticleers have become so consistent and so good that all of their success probably isn’t being fully appreciated. Coastal Carolina has now scored at least 49 points in five of six games and has won its last three matchups by a combined score of 164-29. For all of the acclaim the Chanticleers have garnered, they have earned the attention with their play.
As the overall story of Coastal Carolina continues to be told, the week-to-week success needs to be talked about, too.
The past three weeks have seen the Chanticleers outgain their opponents by a combined yardage total of 1,800 to 629. While the schedule will clearly present a different challenge when Coastal Carolina next plays at Appalachian State in a Sun Belt showcase, championship teams are supposed to look the part in each and every game; the Chanticleers clearly haven’t been looking ahead.
On Thursday night in Jonesboro, Coastal Carolina compiled 685 total yards, setting a new FBS program record.
Quarterback Grayson McCall continued his historic play, completing 18-of-23 passes for 385 yards and four touchdowns. He is on pace to set new FBS records for passer rating, completion percentage and yards per pass attempt. Tight end Isaiah Likely had eight receptions for 232 yards and all four scores, a new school mark. He promptly had a record-setting 99-yard touchdown catch on the Chanticleers’ second play from scrimmage. The defense allowed just 18 rushing yards.
Fittingly, Coastal Carolina is college football’s first 6-0 team. The Chanticleers, just over one month into the season, are already bowl eligible.
Coastal Carolina continues to be one of the best and most consistent teams in the game. More of the same appears to be on the way.
