The NCAA slapped the Georgia Southern football program with two years of probation, a loss of two scholarships and various other minor penalties for improper academic assistance.

The NCAA slapped the Georgia Southern football program with two years of probation, a loss of two scholarships and various other minor penalties for improper academic assistance involving two former athletic department staffers and three athletes.

In one instance in 2013, the NCAA found that a former assistant compliance director at the school gave a football player her flash drive with completed work that she had done as a student in the same course. The player turned in an assignment off the flash drive, was caught cheating, then encouraged to lie by the former compliance director.

In the second instance a year later, a former assistant director of student-athlete services x94 in other words, part of the tutoring program x94 wrote extra credit papers for two football players. The NCAA said the papers were submitted without the players knowledge.

Those staff members were fired shortly after the incidents were investigated and were both given show cause orders through July 6, 2019, meaning they would have to appear in front of the Committee on Infractions if a school hired them during that time frame.

Georgia Southern was ordered to vacate any wins that occurred while players were academically ineligible and the program will lose a total of two scholarships over the next four years. Georgia Southern also will lose 10% of its allowed official visits and recruiting evaluations for a year and a pay a fine of $5,000 plus an amount equal to 1% of its football budget.
