Looking at the top performers in the Sun Belt Conference over the weekend.
Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week: Pete Thomas, Louisiana-Monroe – Thomas put up huge numbers in a 34-27 loss to rival Louisiana. Despite his team’s loss, Thomas threw for 472 yards and two touchdowns, while not tossing a single interception in 54 attempts.
Sun Belt Special Teams Player of the Week: Blaise Taylor, Arkansas State – Taylor had a moster day returning punts for the Red Wolves. Though he only returned three punts on the afternoon, one of those returns went for a touchdown, while yet another went 61 yards to set up the offense deep in App State territory.
Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week: Montres Kitchens, Troy – In what surely amounts to the game of his life, Kitchens intercepted Idaho quarterback Matt Linehan three times on Saturday, returning one 28 yards for a score. He also added eight tackles in the Trojans’ win.
Sun Belt Coach of the Week: Scott Satterfield, Appalachian State – The Mountaineers started off the 2014 season 1-4, and looked really bad in the process. Since that time, however, Appalachian State has rattled off four straight wins, including Saturday’s huge upset of Arkansas State on the road.
Sun Belt X-factor of the Week: Hunter Vaughn, South Alabama – Filling in for the injured Brandon Bridge, Vaughn played very well in leading the Jaguars to a key win over Texas State. The sophomore signal caller completed 20 of his 28 passing attempts on the afternoon.
