A look at the most underrated teams in the Sun Belt East and Sun Belt West.
Sun Belt East
Georgia Southern — The Eagles have to replace a lot of talent, but a lot of talent still returns. Running back J.D. King averaged almost 90 yards rushing per game last season and has 13 rushing touchdowns in 19 games at Georgia Southern. Cornerback Derrick Canteen is back after tying for the national lead with six interceptions as a redshirt freshman. Overall, the Eagles should have one of the best defenses in the country. They held two of their last three opponents to just three points each and return four of their top five tacklers. There will be a spotlight on Statesboro this fall as BYU, Coastal Carolina and Louisiana all come to town a year after combining to go 32-3.
Sun Belt West
South Alabama — Kane Wommack, son of long-time defensive coach Dave Wommack, comes to Mobile after being the defensive coordinator at Indiana. Major Applewhite comes with him as offensive coordinator and Jake Bentley comes in at quarterback. The former South Carolina signal caller threw 45 touchdown passes in the SEC from 2018-2019. Receiver Jalen Tolbert gives Bentley a star playmaker. He recorded 1,085 receiving yards last season, averaging 17 yards per catch and scoring eight touchdowns. Tolbert caught ten passes for 252 yards and three scores versus Arkansas State. Linebacker Nick Mobley and safety Keith Gallmon are back to lead the defense.
